The Challenge of Working with Young People

This is a one day course, the aims of which are to educate workers with young people how to deal with challenge effectively and positively.

This bespoke course can be run at Change or in house, depending on the number of delegates attending.

The day is designed to help those who work individually or in groups with young people whose behaviour can be challenging to understand why there is challenge and how to deal with their own feelings engendered by this behaviour and the underlying beliefs and attitudes that give rise to those feelings. The work will be delivered through presentation, large and small group-discussion, role play and other activities including web resources.

Course Aims:
At the end of the day, the course attendees will be able to:
Understand the difference between normal behaviour for young people and perceived bad behaviours.

Tolerate normal young people’s behaviour.

Understand the underlying philosophy of being solution rather than problem focused.

Have some solution focused skills and be able to use them effectively to create useful conversations rather than repeating language that hasn’t worked in the past.

Understand human interaction from the standpoint of transactional analysis and sidestep confrontation through simple assertive techniques.

Understand simple CBT theory to connect the triggers that some behaviours promote to cause emotional reactions.

Discuss how they may work more effectively with young people to gain positive outcomes.


The Objectives for the day will be:
9.30 Start and introductions, with housekeeping, plus a scaling activity and best hopes for the session as an icebreaker.

10.00 A large group discussion about attitudes to young people, individual and societal and the difficulties young people have to find a voice. Media and electronic media and their influences on beliefs and attitudes.

10.30 A Short role play activity in dyads or triads, practicing problem free talk followed by short large group discussion to reflect and summarise.

11.00 Coffee/tea break

11.15 A summary of solution focused versus problem focused thinking and talking.

11.30 Small group role play practising scaling questions and exceptions

12.00 Large group discussion about learning from that. Feedback and summary.

12.30 Lunch

1.00 Short talk about young peoples brains and why/how they are different.

1.15 Short role play activity based on preferred days (the miracle question)

1.45 Whole group discussion on what has been learned.

2.00 Short presentation on TA and the drama triangle.

2.15 Whole group discussion, feedback and summary.

2.30 Coffee/tea break

2.45 Short presentation on CBT and ABC plus assertiveness.

3.00 Opportunity to role play all that has been learned in triads.

3.30 Group discussion on whole day, summary and feedback.

3.45 Distribution of feedback forms and presentation of certificates.


The course will be run By Clive Whittaker:

Clive Whittaker MA (Couns) BSc (Psych) PGCE Dip Life Coach BACP reg. UKASFP accred. has worked with challenging young people for forty years as a secondary school teacher, year head and psychotherapist.

He has worked as a school counsellor for the last sixteen years in some of the most deprived areas of the city. He is the senior counsellor at Change, Birmingham Brief Therapy, where he is also the senior trainer and supervisor.

He is on the UKASFP accrediting body for SFBT. Change BBT trains counsellors, health and social workers and teachers Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT ) up to a nationally recognised Diploma standard, including a Certificate in Youth Counselling. He Taught on the University of Birmingham MA in SFBT and is a guest lecturer at both Birmingham and Newman Universities.

He has taught Mentors how to work with challenging young people at Second City Second Chance and Pioneers, both mentoring charities for over ten years. He has taught many of the cities learning mentors. The course he teaches the mentors involves the principles of SFBT, TA and CBT as well as personal development and understanding so that workers can interact successfully with challenging young persons without getting in a tangle and taking things personally.

Cost: £600 plus VAT regardless of numbers. A Change attendance certificate will be awarded. This can lead the attendees to further advancement in SFBT through our in-house courses
